Drained battery is still a big issue on the iPhone 3G. Users traveling often for 6 hours in a row will recognize this issue. To overcome this issue, the original iPhone 1.0 users had find their way to the stylish Mophie 'Juice Pack. At this moment of writing, the iPhone 3G won't fit in the Mophie Juice Pack. On their website, the company states: "Unfortunately, the current design is intended for use with the first generation Apple iPhone ONLY. The dimensions of the 3G iPhone will not allow for cross compatibility. We will be releasing a version of the Juice Pack for the 3G iPhone soon." Another alternative is the 3G Juice. This Battery Pack should charge your iPhone 1.0 or iPhone 3G as soon you plug it in. See for more information on the 3G Juice website of the European reseller. Also read the story about this person on how he (suddenly) became the european reseller of this product. The price is 35 euro (56 US$)[UPDATE: And for orders from outside europe, the price is 45 US$ plus costs dependent on where your live], that is including shipping costs. According to the website, the product is certified by Apple: the so called "Works with iPhone" label. When a performance review is available, we at IT&T will update this post. Our expectations is 6-8 hours extra battery life because the site is talking about a 'life doubler'.

The US price is $45, so a little lower then you wrote.
got one, and yes, it's a life doubler, so about 7 hrs.

I found this useful as well apple's battery guide Apple's Battery Guide or this site for a whole bunch of extra tips Great tips for using your new 3G iPhone.
I've read that turning off Push will help the battery life a lot. Seems the phone will not go into standby while Push is enabled.
A buddy of mine sells the same thing, cheaper. His website is http://www.ipwr.com and use this all caps coupon code to save 5% off your total purchase: VIDBOXNET
