I was so happy that Fring [App Store link] came available last Sunday. Fring is the only application that provides all Instant Messaging (Skype, AIM MSN Yahoo Google Talk Twitter ICQ), SIP Voice and Skype Voice. And it is free! But most people who remember Fring in iPhone 1st generation: Fring was always online. For techies: Fring was run as a service. So you could leave your iPhone in your pocket in sleepmode. As soon as your friends send IM messages, you will get notified. When you walk at the office where you have a proper WiFi connection, your friends could call you on you Fring Skype voice or Fring SIP voice and your iPhone Frings!
But now, via the official Apple App Store, it is not allowed to let your software run as a service. As soon you shut down Fring, you can't get notified, just because you shutdown the program. So what is the the workaround? Well there is a good one I think. But? But it only works for jailbroken iPhones [jailbreak post]. If you have jailbroken your iPhone and have Cydia installed then it is just a few steps ahead to get this solved.
- Install the Backgrounder application in Cydia/System category.
- Start Fring as usual
- Click and hold the Home button until you see shortly "Backgrounder Enabled".
- Done! Fring now will remain active and closes the window. You can do other things with the iPhone or put it in sleep mode. It will remain active for IM or call notification.

I have a problem, when I close Fring (with backgrounder enabled) after some minute I open Fring and I'm not connected. I will force the application closing for connect me again. You can help me?
ReplyDeleteMaybe I can help with a workaround.
ReplyDeleteLater this morning I had the same experience: enable backgrounder in the Fring. Fring close. I open Fring again and Fring must reconnect again. A Red Cross appears on the Fring icon. A few seconds later it is connected again. This indicates Fring is start-up from scratch. I could reproduce it by watching the processes in the shell (running top in mobile Terminal app). Fring was not running in background. But I have a workaround.. I did a "Fast Respring" with BossPrefs. After that I started Fring again with BackGrounder enabled. I watched the top application and the Fring process was running in background as expected.
Hope other readers can leave a message with a logical explanation and solution?
