iPhone App Store: Dragrace performance

Q: What? A: The iPhone fw 2.0 software is Dynolicious [App Store]. Q: What does it do? A: Measures everything of your cars performance. The software offers a real-time readout of acceleration, lateral G, braking G, standard drag racing timing, and it calculates wheel horsepower. Q: How does it calculate the results? A: From the data you provide on weight and drivetrain efficiency. The software achieves this remarkable feat using the built-in accelerometer in the iPhone (and iPod Touch). The accelerometer is the same feature that allows the iphone to "know" when you've turned it sideways or shaken it. Q: How much? A: currently 10.49 euro. Q: Is there a demo? A: Yes, tap HERE to watch a guy driving like crazy in his car with Dynolicious activated.(Doesn't play on an iPhone iPod) But THIS stream does play. It starts from 2.50 minute Q: What performance counters are measured by the software? A: Specifically, the Dynolicious software gives you:

  • 0-60 MPH
  • Other Speed Tests (0-10 MPH through 0-100 MPH in 10MPH increments)
  • Quarter Mile Elapsed Time
  • Quarter Mile Trap Speed
  • Elapsed Time and Trap Speed for standard intervals (60', 330', 1/8 Mi, 1000')
  • Lateral G's (current and peak)
  • Braking G's (current and peak)
  • Wheel Horsepower
  • Estimated Engine Horsepower
  • Realtime Speedometer and Graphs
  • Realtime graphical skidpad display
  • View results for latest test run or any saved run
  • View averages based on vehicle, date, or modification
  • Compare results between vehicles, dates, or before-and-after modifications

iPhone TIPS: The rise of adult movie sites [NSFW]

[UPDATE 25 May 2009] For Jailbreaker please checkout our new post about the dTunes Tool: iPhone TIPS:How To Download Movies To iPhone iPod /wo PC or Mac
Last time I posted something about iRotic [NSFW] A site hosting a self-claimed 1000+ adult video streams offering some free clips. You guess what? Moments later, we received tips from readers all over the world with more URLs of other adult sites. Well of course, we at IT&T did check the URLs :). Some were pay sites but optimized for iPhone, some were just regular big-ass PC sites and some were iPhone optimized with 'rich content' and...........free! Well, we didn't fully tested the sites, don't blame us when they ask for donations... So we will update you with our findings about these sites tipped by our readers. Anyway, one of the sites is iFap.to [NSFW] The "About this site" info states:
"This site contains user-generated adult content website"
Can you imagine you are contributing for such a sites? :) Lets have a look at this iPhone optimized site. It provides neat functions very similar like YouTube. Search, Top Rated videos, Most viewed videos, Newest videos, Upcoming videos and Longest video. They really have videos with a playtime of 60+ minutes.
Another site is iPhonequickies.com.[NSFW] This site claims to be a free site but it is not. Also, It is like there are just 10-20 available stream . Why? If you look at the categories, you will see the same streams again and again. The site was also a bit slow at the moment of testing.
The third site is teensaunaturel.com. [NSFW] Looking at this URL, you can imagine this is a specialized site. This site is a hq quality photos site. The Home, Archives, Links and Sitemap icons helps you to navigate through the site. [a 'thanks' to the anonymous readers who tipped us with these and other URLs] If you know better, richer, real free, non-pay sites, please leave a comment. Thanks!

iPhone News: Zune Tattoo guy got Apple, realizing Zune sucks

I found this interesting story about Steven Smith. He is also known as the Zune Tattoo Guy or Mszunefan (read MS Zune fan). What is the news?  Well, he has abruptly ended his man-love obsession with all things Zune, willfully defecting to the tender Touch of Apple's iPod after realizing Zune sucks. [via iPhoneSavior.com]

iPhone App Store TIPS: Aqua Forest is coool, we know why!

Do you remember the physics game? Well, if you are new, that was an 1st gen. application, where you can literally create things like sticks, object and let them drop according the gravity law of Newton. It makes use of then accelerometer and let the created objects behave like 'real' objects when you flip your iPhone. Similar to Physics but much more rich is the App Store program called Aqua Forest [App Store]. You are in the forest, and you create water, fire among other actions. Flip around your iPhone and it will behave like water or fire in the forest. Just have a look at this YouTube stream.

Conclusion: Great and unique application, fun to show off to your friends. $7,99 makes Aqua Forest not then cheapest but the fun you get to stimulate the human creativity justifies the price. Buy Now at App Store

iPhone 3G TIPS:Download YouTube streams with fw 2.0

Good news! More and more firmware 1.1.4 applications are getting ported to firmware 2.0. One of my favorite 1.1.4 applications is MxTube. With MxTube, I can download my favorite YouTube streams permanently to my iPhone. In areas where I don't have EDGE or GPRS and no WIFI reception, I am still able to play the downloaded streams 'offline'. This is a cool feature when you are located in, for example, an airplane or on a remote campsite. Or I can avoid expensive data roaming abroad when watching online. Just have a look at the 1.1.4 MxTube post HERE. What is the good news then? Well, the developer just has announced to publish MxTube 2.0 within 5 days. Have a look at their blog HERE. MxTube will be available for Jailbroken iPhones 1st Gen and 3G with firmware 2.0. So this application is not available at App Store. One of the features is that downloads can processed in as background process. Apple does not allow applications running in background processes. [picture: fw 1.1.x MxTube release]

iPhone 3G TIPS: Protect from scratches with Louis Vuitton

If you like to protect your iPhone from little scratches when on the move, you could order some rubber of silicon iPhone cases. The problem with these is, it totally covers the nice and shiny design. You are better of with an iPhone 'sock' model. If you want to use your iPhone, you just slide your iPhone out of the sock. Well if you planned to buy such a sock and you have enough money to spend, you could consider to go for a Louis Vuitton iPhone 'sock'. There are several models and colors in a price range of 245 to 285 USD. To see them, go to their SITE and search for 'iPhone'.

iPhone App Store TIPS: Purchase once but download it twice

Q: What is up? A: Well, few days ago, THIS blog posted this iPhone Tip. The post tells you that if you purchased an application in App Store once, for example Monkey Ball 9,95 US$, you can download it more than one time. Q: how does it work? A: Well it can be complicated but the simplest way to explain is to assume you have the following equipment: Computer A, Computer B, iTunes account A and iTunes Account B. iPhone A and iPhone B. The concept is to purchase Monkey Ball with iTunes account A from Computer A. You then can upload and play Monkey Ball on iPhone A. Next you login with iTunes account A again but now on Computer B. Then when you try to buy MonkeyBall, iTunes will popup with a message "You have already purchased this item" If you choose OK, iTunes will download Monkey Ball again for free on Computer B. The connected iPhone B will synched Monkey Ball for free. The end result is that you pay once and download and play twice. Q: Do you have step-by-step instructions? A: No but you can find them HERE . However I didn't tested it because at the moment I have one iPhone:) Disclaimer: This post is NOT intended to encourage you to share or borrow your iTunes account to allow friends to get free premium applications from App Store.

iPhone 3G TIPS: Cheapest battery extender

Good news! We saw a lot battery extenders for the iPhone 1st gen. and 3G. All of them are well priced, but the shipping cost may vary making the total cost a lot higher. But today I found a Hong Kong based online shop which offers three cool iPhone battery extenders for very good prices. remember: I am not get paid for writing this post. I think this is not possible when you see the prices. For example, for just 28 USD (around 18 euro) you can buy a 1000 mA (around 16 euro) battery extender (check the demo at the store). Or even cheaper, the 800 mA version for just 25 USD. If you want something special, you could try the 2200 mA super charger: Look at THIS 2200mA cool demo. But what is really special here? Well, the price includes the worldwide shipping cost!! Disclaimer: I haven't test the batteries yet but I definately order one here. So don't blame me if the batteries are not good or dangerous.

[UPDATE] iPhone 3G TIPS: Which pre-paid iPhones are SIM Lock free ?

I want the iPhone 3G but I don't want a new contract for 18, 24 or 36 months, what can I do? This is an often heard question in iPhone forum topics. The reasons for unwilling to sign is that the plans are sometimes well overpriced compared with for example SIM-only plans. Another reason is that people just signed for a plan with another telco provider, and it costs them money to break the signed contract. One solution is to get a Pre-Paid iPhone. The problem is that it is not clear which Pre-Paid iPhones are offered as SIM lock free, because you want a phone where you can slip in any SIM card of any operator of your choice. The good news is that I found a website which provides an overview of a lot of plans and prepaid offers, tap HERE to have a look. This site also tells you which Pre-paid offers are SIM lock free. The bad news for non-native dutch speakers, the site is written in dutch. At this moment of writing, the site reports only three operators in europe are offering SIM lock free prepaid iPhones. That is TIM Italy (499 euro 8GB version and 569 16GB version) and Vodafone Italy (499 euro 8GB, 16GB version unknown) and Mobistar Belgium(525 euro 8GB version and 615 euro 16GB version). That is conform our Italy post earlier tap HERE. We also see that the cheapest iPhone 3G is sold in Switzerland for just 323 euro but according to the dutch site, the Swissom pre-paid iPhone is SIM Locked, a pity. Another question is, must I show an ID or Passport to buy the phone? [UPDATE: According to iPhone-ticker.de Swisscom has decided to sell only to holders of Swiss ID's. You have to show your ID or Passport or ID in the shop. Also Swiss residents may buy only 1 pre-paid iPhone per customer] Suppose you are Canadian on holiday in Italy. Is it allowed as Canadian citizen to buy that Italian unlocked Pre-Paid iPhone in Italy? If you know the answer please leave a message. thanks. Things will gonna change if the iPhone-Dev Team or Geohot or whoever, will succeed to 'software unlock' the iPhone 3G with firmware 2.0. In that situation, the SIM locked iPhones from the overview, like Swisscom's 323 euro iPhone, will be interesting for the rest of the world. So I like to know by forehand if it is possible that for example a New Zealand passport holder can go to Switzerland and buy the 323 euro iPhone without questioning.

iPhone 3G TIPS: Use iPhone as internet laptop modem

Q: What? A: This tip from cre.ations.net let your iPhone behave as an internet modem. Q: What are the benefits doing this? A: Well, you can surf the internet on your big-ass laptop using the 3G (GPRS UMTS HSDPA) data connection of your iPhone 3G. Q: Does it also work on older iPhones with firmware 1.1.x? A: Yes! If you don't want to upgrade to firmware 2.0 and still want to tether your EDGE or GPRS connection, please tap HERE to get the instructions Q: Is it legal? A: The blog states "Warning - Tethering your iPhone is against the iPhone data plan terms. AT&T could slap you with huge fees if you overuse this. I recommend only using it during emergencies." Q: Do I have to jailbreak my iPhone? A: Yes, you need to jailbreak your iPhone because the programs 3Proxy and Terminal needs to be installed. These programs are not available from the Apple App Store. Instead, but they are via Cydia installer. The latter will be available after you perform the  jailbreak published by iPhone Dev Team with the pwnage tool 2.o Q: Oke, I want it! How? A: Look at the overview below and goto Nate True's instructions HERE.

iPhone 3G: Pervert alerter on Japanese iPhone 3G

Q: What is going on? A: According to Japanese blogger Nobuyuki Hayashi, the annoying shutter sound of the Japanese-bound iPhone 3G cannot be switched off, even in silent mode. Q: Why? A: Because perverts cannot be trusted not to shove their phones up some women skirt and snap a picture. So big is the problem of under-skirt photography that almost no Japanese phones can have the shutter sound disabled. We're guessing that the shutter clicks are not loud enough to be heard on Tokyo's busy subway. It's the first country-specific change to the iPhone ever. Can anyone with a 'Japanese' iPhone 3G confirm this functionality tweak? I hope this post will not bring the rest of the world with idea's with the 3G in silence mode:-)

iPhone TIPS: [mild NSFW] ]Old school wallpaper sharing

I used to be fan of  the Wallpaper app. Start it and it will show you wallpapers of other iPhone owners in the world. Very Web 2.0+ but since the App Store came live 11th July, I got spammed with wallpapers promoting App Store applications like Tap Tap Revolution, Friends Book, Twinkle. Most of them are freeware, but still, I just want to see and save nice wallpapers of fellow iPhone owners. That's why I removed the Wallpaper app because I get flooded with horrible spampapers. But where do I get my 'nice' wallpapers now? Well, Flickr.com is a good place, but among the nice ones, you often get rubbish. But just minutes ago, I found my place. It is a good old forum (hosted by macrumors) where users can post their 'nicest' iPhone wallpapers to share with anybody on the web. No spampapers, but mostly artistic, sexy and nice. Tap HERE and don't forget to post your 'nicest' wallpapers.

iPhone TIPS: Apple Remote App controls Apple TV

Q: What is the Remote App? A: The Remote App is a free download from the App Store and runs on firmware 2.0 both the iPhone 1G, 3G and iPod Touch. It adds remote control capabilities for both iTunes and your Apple TV. Q. How does it work? A: It works through your local Wi-Fi network connection. Q:What devices can you control with Remote App? A: It can control the Apple TV as remote media browser so you can browse and play both music and video. Q: Can I use the touchscreen keyboard to do searches? A: Well, partly. You can use the keyboard to do YouTube searches of search the iTunes Store on the Apple TV. Q: What is the main benefit. A: Of course it is cool to use your iPhone (or iPod) to control Apple TV but the main benefit is  the convenient 'wireless' keyboard of the iPhone because it is much better than the television remote selecting letter by letter.

iPhone 3G TIPS: APN Changer GPRS UMTS

[updated july 3th 2009] A new post regarding to OS 3.0 APN Settings and MMS on an iPhone 2G available HERE
[updated june 18th 2009 ]A new post regarding OS 3.0 APN Settings and Tethering /wo Jailbreak available HERE

Q: How can I change the APN settings on my iPhone 3G or iPhone 1st generation with firmware 2.0 loaded? For some reason, the "Cellular Data Network" option can sometimes be invisible, So you can not get into the Advanced screen to change the APN setting.[see pic] Instead you will get a 3G On/Off switch. A: I think this situation is relevant for the upgraded iPhone 1G to FW 2.0 (and unlocked and jailbreaked it today) and for the iPhone 3G pre-paid phones (and jailbreaked today) without SIM lock. For those situations, you may try the following website to generate a custom APN settings file. The url is http://www.unlockit.co.nz. Have a look at that site, and follow the instructions which suits you most. Please checkout worldwide APN settings in THIS older post. I haven't test this and I am curious if it automatically import the settings from the website into the APN profile. That's why I will really appreciate those readers are willing to share their experiences here with other readers

[UPDATED] iPhone 3G TIPS: PwnageTool 2.0 No iPhone 3G unlock

[UPDATE: iPhone-Dev Team just released version 2.0.1 of PwnageTool. It addresses 5 issues discovered today. You don't have to do the trick again, but it is recommended to download and install version 2.0.1] Hours ago, the iPhone-Dev Team has released their PwnageTool_2.0.zip package. The Team has published some mirrors for download this package. You can find them HERE. At this moment of writing, all mirrors are a kind of overloaded :). Many iPhone weblogs have asked the community to create mirrors for spreading the load. In short, iPhone 1.0 (1st generation) you can Jailbreak + SIM Unlock + Cydia installer. iPhone 3G can Jailbreak + Cydia Installer. Notice: NO iPhone 3G SIM Unlock.

The main question for the iPhone 1st generation owners is: Should I upgrade to firmware 2.0? I assume the majority of the around 5 million 1st generation iPhone owners did the jailbreak, and hundred thousand's have SIM unlocked the 1.1.4 firmware, Well it depends. Applications which works on 1.1.4 may not work at all with 2.0. If you rely on these applications on a day to day basis, don't upgrade yet. First check if the equivalent applications is available on the App Store or keep contact the developers websites for updates for 2.0. But, if you only need the new features in 2.0 you can go for it now. Before you start, read the experiences HERE. Currently, there is an issue found in the mail application with a solution. The next are the iPhone 3G owners group, which have a working 2.0 firmware onboard. My guess is that around 70-80 percent of the iPhone 3G owners have signed a plan for 18 to 24 months and thus 20-30 percent has a pre-paid 3G device. At this moment you can not SIM unlock your iPhone 3G with this tool. So the only benefit is to install applications which are not available yet on the App Store. I don't believe the problem is that you have to pay for good software. So I think, the only group who is interested in jail breaking the 3G phone are the more geeky technical people who wants to fully control the operating system MacOSX. This could be independent developers who are practicing Open Application Development. For those people it suitable to go for it.

[UPDATED] iPhone news: Status of jailbreak firmware 2.0

[UPDATE] iPhone-Dev Team just posted a hint: "We love sundays. We think you will too". For IT&T this is a clear sign: the PwnageTool version 2.0 will be released tomorrow (or next sunday). I will give you a status update concerning the unlocking and jail breaking progress of the iPhone (3G and 1st gen). To start with the iPhone-dev team, they have promised to release a new version of their PwnageTool. The new version number is 2.0 and is scheduled to release in the beginning of next week. This is what it should do for you: The tool will do all the magic for 1st generation iPhones upgraded to 2.0 firmware. It will jailbreak, activate, enable 3rd party apps with the progress in, enable Apple AppStore and also it will unlock the iPhone. If you are an iPhone 1st gen, then congratulations. That is all what 1st gen iPhone owners could wish for. If you have accidentally upgraded your iPhone 1stgen with firmware 2.0 then you are lucky, just wait a few days. Okay iPhone 3G owner, this is your part: The new tool will do some magic for iPhone 3G as well. It will jailbreak, activate, enable 3rd party apps with Installer and enable Apple AppStore. Thats it. The unlock for iPhone 3G will not arrive next week. For iPhone 3G users with a plan, this is just fine, because they have signed a contract for 18 to 24 months. For Pre-paid iPhone 3G owners, they sadly have to use the prepaid card of "Apple's choice". The wonderful result after 1 week of the iPhone 3G release, is that the jail break will be available to all iPhone owner enabling them to install more free applications.
Just some moments ago, GeoHot claimed he "decrypted the 2.0 ramdisk with the key 50AFC271132D15AE6989565567E65BF ", in fact claiming he could perform the jailbreak too. The Dev-Team and GeoHot are using provocations to tease each other. We will wait and see next week and keep you up-to date.

iPhone 3G TIPS: 330 US$ (209 euro) profit from each iPhone 3G

According to cnnmoney, Apple appears to earn 330US$ (209 euro) per iPhone. In the three days, Apple has earned 330.000.000 US$. That is not a bad start, because the Apple will pass the 2 million sold iPhone 3G soon.  Well let me have a look in the crystal ball. If Apple will sell 1 million iPhones every month from August to December. 5 months x 1 million iPhones x 330US$ = 1650 million US$. That is a hell of a lot of money money money. My friends, if your are doing stocks, you probably know by know which one to pick!  But wait, also the App Store is introduced and the free firmware version 2.0 upgrade for the 5 million original iPhone has arrived to. This will result in around 10.000.000 potential App Store (and iTunes) customers buying nice native programs. And that is easy I can tell you. Just tapping around the App Store with your "I-need-to-hit-the-green-buy-button-and-buy something-Now"  iTunes account. This congruent revenue and profit will be ongoing beyond 2008, unless......the hackers community will provide the same native programs, but now for free. Who can tell what happens the coming days? We wait and see.

iPhone 3G TIPS: Two great keyboard tricks for domain completion

Two iPhone 3G keyboard tips. The first is not a completely new iPhone tip, but it is new for iPhone 3G newcomers and in my opinion a  very practical one: In Safari web browser, in the website URL field, you can now hold down the .com button to get a selection of other domain name endings for your url: .net .edu and .org. By tapping on one of the endings, it will append it to complete your URL. For original jailbroken iPhone (1.0) owners, this function was already available via language packs installed from Installer or Cydia. Another new keyboard trick is that you should also get .net .edu or .org domain name endings along with .com by holding down the period (.) button in the compose email screen. I did not discover this function in on my iPhone 1.0. Overal, these are neat features to refine the keyboard for easy usage. [picture shows a jailbroken iPhone 1.4 with dutch language pack]

iPhone 3G TIPS: Microsoft CEO Ballmer laughs at Apple iPhone

Well, actually this interview was just 1,5 year ago. Steve Ballmer was laughing about the prize and the keyboardless design of the iPhone. Meanwhile millions of iPhones were sold in the last 400 days and Apple make revenues and profits in the smartphone business, the way where Microsoft can only dream of. Talking in worldwide usage of mobile browsers, Safari will kill Microsoft Internet Explorer just because Apple was creative enough to re-invent "the keyboard and mouse" by means of a very very user friendly multi-touch screen. And now, "Microsoft Exchange support and more" is built-in the iPhone 3G package, the iPhone can prove it's readiness for the corporate market. We will see how well the market will pick this up. Meanwhile we are curious in Microsoft's and Ballmer's next move. Who knows the Z(une)phone is the answer...

iPhone 3G: Currently sold out in 21 U.S. states

Q: What and where? A: As of 6am EDT Tuesday, all three models, 8GB black, 16 GB black or white of theiPhone 3G "were sold out in 21 states, according to Jim Neal, a retired PR man living near Kansas City who took the time to check each of Apple’s 188 U.S. retail stores using the company’s iPhone availability widgets," Philip Elmer-DeWitt blogs for Fortune. "'All told,' he writes, '117 Apple stores reported having sold out of all models and only 27 stores indicated they had all three models in stock.'" "The states reporting no stock on hand were Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oregon, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Utah, Washington, Wisconsin," Elmer-DeWitt reports. iPhone 3G TIPS: 10.000.000 App Store downloads

10 million App Store downloads were performed since it went online last Thursday. Currently there are 800 applications available. Around 200 iPhone 3G apps are freeware, and 600 iPhone 3G non-free apps. 90 percent of the non-free catagory costs 10 US$ or less.

iPhone 3G TIPS: Remove App Store apps well

Q: How to deal with iPhone applications downloaded from the App Store which have proven difficult to remove? A: Two solution, 1. is to tap and hold any icon on the iPhone until all icons begin to shake. Then tap on the black “X” in the upper left end of the icon, and the application is deleted from the iPhone. And 2. is view applications in your iTunes library on your computer, control or right-click any application and select “delete”. Tip: if you delete the application from the iPhone, the computer will reload it when you sync again. Please refer to Apple Knowledge Base document HT1977: “If you delete an Application from your iTunes library, the next time you sync your iPhone or iPod touch with that computer it will be removed from the device. If you delete an application from your device, but not from your iTunes library, it will be synced back to your device the next time your connect to iTunes. NOTE: If you normally sync applications to your device from one computer and then connect it to iTunes on another computer, iTunes will not attempt to sync applications from that library. Applications can only be synced from one iTunes library. If you are connected your iPhone or iPod touch to an iTunes library that you don't normally sync with, you can still transfer purchased applications from the device by choosing File > Transfer Purchases in iTunes.

iPhone 3G TIPS: Semi-conductors mapped

For the readers who are also interested in the iPhone 3G hardware components, this is the picture you need. [click for a large image] The semi-conductors, as used in the iPhone 3G, are mapped by Semi Conductor insight. In the overview poster, every semi-conductor lists the brand name, type and or part number and functional name. Figure out that chip-cooker Infineon manufactures both the GPS Receiver and UMTS Transceiver (3G). Prior the iPhone 3G release (11th July 2008) Commercial Times posted a list of 3G chip manufacturers. And on launch day 11th, spareparts company ifixit.com was the first ever disassembled the iPhone 3G.

[UPDATED] iPhone 3G TIPS: Apple certified 3G juice extender

Drained battery is still a big issue on the iPhone 3G. Users traveling often for 6 hours in a row will recognize this issue. To overcome this issue, the original iPhone 1.0 users had find their way to the stylish Mophie 'Juice Pack. At this moment of writing, the iPhone 3G won't fit in the Mophie Juice Pack. On their website, the company states: "Unfortunately, the current design is intended for use with the first generation Apple iPhone ONLY. The dimensions of the 3G iPhone will not allow for cross compatibility. We will be releasing a version of the Juice Pack for the 3G iPhone soon." Another alternative is the 3G Juice. This Battery Pack should charge your iPhone 1.0 or iPhone 3G as soon you plug it in. See for more information on the 3G Juice website of the European reseller. Also read the story about this person on how he (suddenly) became the european reseller of this product. The price is 35 euro (56 US$)[UPDATE: And for orders from outside europe, the price is 45 US$ plus costs dependent on where your live], that is including shipping costs. According to the website, the product is certified by Apple: the so called "Works with iPhone" label. When a performance review is available, we at IT&T will update this post. Our expectations is 6-8 hours extra battery life because the site is talking about a 'life doubler'.

So if the videoconference software will added in firmware 2.1 or later, you will need a webcam on the front side to do VC. Well, fellow techblog Gizmodo.com has published an article with the Apple Videoconference Kit. With this kit, any iPhone owner can perform face to face calls with the current iPhone hardware. And, it does not need juice [Photo via Gizmodo.com]

[UPDATED] iPhone TIPS: Google searches iPhone contacts

Q: What is new? A: Today Google is showing off their first native app for the iPhone and iPod touch. It is called Google Mobile App. Q: What Does it do? A: It combines powerful Google services with a slick interface, so you can find what you're looking for faster and more easily ever. Q: How does this work? A: Google Mobile App gives you a single text box to search through your contacts and the web. As soon as you start typing, it scours Google for things to help you. These could be typing suggestions, website suggestions or easy access to a search you made before. Google Mobile App even searches as you type so that you see results as soon as you finish typing. Over time, the App remembers the things you do most and puts them at the top. Location aware searching with auto-suggest, contacts searching as well as local business search (typing in pizza gives you an option to search for pizza near you). Unfortunately, as Lifehacker pointed out, it only searches your contacts, not your calendar or email. Q: Has it location based features, so it utilizes my iPhone 3G GPS? A: Yep, Google Mobile App also uses the My Location feature to detect your current location and show nearby businesses on a map. If you use other Google mobile products you'll find them through the "Explore more" button - all in one place. Q: Can you show me? A: Yep, tap HERE to see Google Mobile App in action. Q: How can I get it? A: Currently I think it will be freeware at the Apple Appstore and firmware 2.0. As of writing this, the google announcement is just one hour ago, so we have work to do. [UPDATE: Google Mobile available for free at the Appstore.]

iPhone 3G: Getting robbed, some tips to avoid it

11th July is synonym for the Launch Day. Hunderds of iPhone 3G fans are queued in front of iPhone stores to pick-up this serious device. Yes, the iPhone 3G is a real wannahave device. A lot of countries have there stores opened at 00:00:01 hours on th 11th July, which is fun, a launch party atmosphere. But be carefull, this will certanly lure robbers to go to those places too. TIP 1: Don't leave the iPhone stores alone, because you will get robbed.Tip 2: Take an (anonymous) plastic bag to the iPhone store. Put the iPhone into this bag, so it won't get attention from (potential) robbers and / or jalous friends. So don't get robbed on launch night.

iPhone 3G: Rogers rip-off rates reduced

Rogers, a dominant Canadian wireless provider has announced today to offer more for less regarding the iPhone 3G rate plans. This is a good news for New Zealand iPhone 3G fans. Vodafone New Zealand (outcry NZ iPhone fans HERE) may learn from Rogers steps to anticipate to the outcry of Canadian iPhone 3G fans by lowering the monthly rate and giving more gigabytes data. But still, the THREE YEAR!! contract is not from this planet!! Read Rogers announcement in this press release.

iPhone TIPS: check your e-mail every minute

Suppose you have a jailbroken (original) iPhone and don't want to upgrade to firmware 2.0 yet (even if it cost you 10 US$ only), because you prefer the free applications from Installer or Cydia over the Apple Appstore. Then, you may missing the possibility to have pushmail, which is built-in firmware 2.0 software. No problem, we introduce a "near-realtime fake pushmail" for the 1.1.3 and 1.1.4 iPhone owners. By default, the (original) iPhone checks for new e-mail every 15 minutes. To reduce this period to 60 seconds could provide a (fake) push mail experience. You need a IMAP-account nodig like Gmail. How? First access your iPhone filesystem with SSH,WinSCP,FuGu or whatever you are using.

Edit the key Autofetchinterval on this file:

/var/mobile/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mobilemail.plist

On older iPhones, the file is located here:

/var/root/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mobilemail.plist

Change this key:

AutoFetchInterval
15

into this value:

AutoFetchInterval
1

Be aware of 15 times more traffic, especially when you travelling abroad. Also the power consumption will increase causing you running out of juice faster. Some e-mail providers protects the fetch frequency, especially POP3 providers.
WARNING: I haven't test it myself so your are on your own by now.

iPhone 3G: Worldwide tariffs plans compared

Fellow weblog iPhone Atlas posted an artical where they (try to) compare worldwide tariffs and plan costs with one another. Please be aware that these prices are subject to change instantly: There are pressing complains, like in New Zealand, coming from future iPhone owners regarding the enormous amount of money they have to pay during the contract period of 18 to 24 months. (up-to 6199 NZ$ with in 24 months ! crazy) Even petitions are started against the rip-off deals of providers. via iphoneatlas.com

iPhone 3G: New York Time iPhone review (and others)

There is a review available by DAVID POGUE technology writer of the New York Times. No YouTube stream like the original iPhone unfortunately but still great to read. One of his findings is the improvement in audio quality: "gigantic step forward. You sound crystal clear to your callers, and they sound crystal clear to you. In fact, few cellphones sound this good." And about the GPS "the iPhone’s G.P.S. antenna is much too small to emulate the turn-by-turn navigation of a G.P.S. unit for a vehicle, for example."Read the whole story at NYT

iPhone 3G: Vodafone's Outrageous Kiwi iPhone costs

If you are a Kiwi, or a poor backpacker travelling around in the magnificent landscape of New Zealand and you want to carry a brand new iPhone 3G in your pocket... Hmmm well, the iPhone could cost you as much as 6199 kiwi dollars! (4547 US$ or 2893 euros). What is going on? Well vodafone published New Zealands subscription prices today. The most expensive monthly option comes with the lowest entry price - $199 for an 8GB iPhone, but a massive $250 per month with just 1GB of data on a two-year plan. (24x$250+199$=6199$ HELL). The Kiwi's are not amused with those prices and a petition is started against this ripoff deal. via nzherald.co.nz

iPhone 3G: Belgium 525 euros simlock free and subscription free

The new 3G iPhone will sell in Belgium on Friday without a mandatory subscription or network lock, it said on Tuesday. It will also not tie purchases to a Mobistar subscription, in accordance with Belgian trade law banning joint offers. The law also bars sales at a loss. Mobistar will sell the 8 gigabyte (GB) iPhone for 525 euros ($823.6), including sales tax, and the 16 GB model for 615 euros.

iPhone Tips: Do you iPhone in bed Poll results

The last months, we have put a poll on the main page. The question to our readers was: Do you iPhone in bed and if yes, what do you do with it :) Ofcourse it is NOT statistically solid but may I put down what my oppinion is about the poll result? thanks. Well we received 997 votes from our readers thanks you very very much! And I mean it this time. 84 of you never ever play around with it (why not? can be fun). For the rest of us, Yes we play around in bed with our iPhone. I know, the shortage of possible answers limits the granularity, Like using the phone function! A lot of us are just making phone calls with the iPhone. What a suprise. Like myself, a lot of others are chatting around. It is funny, most likely we all have jailbroken phones, where we have native IM clients installed like fring! and MobileChat. That is a good sign for Steve, because we finally have a smartphone which is used more than just the phone functions. The blast is of cours that 700 (70 percent!) of us are surfing the internet. And that is just an amazing number. Our overall conclusion is that a device called iPhone is more time as an internet PC rather than as a phone to call people. So steve you succeeded! The iPhone is more than a phone, it is a big internet PC making the built-in Safari browser to be the number 1 browser by smartphones!

iPhone 3G: 499 euro sim-lock free Italian iPhone

"niente sim-lock" Summer holiday 2008 is started. If you want to buy a sim-lock free iPhone 3G, jump in your car for a holiday in Italy. Of course it is not the cheapest country to stay, but for 499 euro, you could be a 'real' iPhone 3G owner. Most of us are planning to pay monthly fees as much as 30 - 60 euros the coming 18 or 24 months, ending up total paying 840-1000 euros. But you will be having pizza and pasta while playing around your iPhone 3G with any SIM card your already own, just like the first generation iPhones out-of-the-box! And most importantly: without any geeky unlock-actions. Italian blog Macity.net claims, both TIM and Vodafone will offer simlock free iPhone 3G for 499 euro (8GB version)and (569 euro for the 16GB). Just slip-in any SIM card and make your GSM calls. The only thing you must arrange is manual punching-in the correct APN settings for your GPRS EDGE UMTS HSDPA data connection of your data provider. via macitynet.it

iPhone 3G: Confidential iPhone 3G workbook downloadable

A highly confidential Apple iPhone 3G workbook is leaked-out on internet. A dutch blog named allaboutphones.nl has published an iPhone workbook containing highly confidential sales information. This workbook is written in the dutch language and is part of a salescourse that will prepare T-Mobile store employees in-depth. It will train them how to answer tough questions from (dutch) iPhone 3G customers. The Netherlands will start selling the iPhone 3G from 11th July.
Some example Q&A's are the following. Q: Is there a speeddial function built-in? A: You can dial a number by tapping only twice when using the favorites list or recent calls. Q: Is there a vibration mode on the phone? A: Yes Q: I don't want to scroll the long contact list, what can I do? A: In the contact list you'll find an alphabetical 'index' from where you can scroll staight to the contact you want. Not that confidential for the first generation iPhone owners I suppose...
