In an earlier post [link] we at IT&T spoke out our hopes that the new iPhone, which can be expected this summer, will have a magnetometer or digital compass onboard so making future Augmented Reality apps (like wikitude in the G1) available for us iPhone lovers. The tech blog Apple Insider reports that the Digital Compass hardware chip on the new iPhone will be provided by hardware manufacturer Asahi Kasei. NO this is not a "good bacteria" of a pro biotic drink. If you are developing on SDK 3.0, you should been come across the "compass" directory to find tge header files from the AK8973 azimuth sensor chip. See the excellent quote's of Apple Insider about this Digital Compass Chip"Asahi Kasei's azimuth sensor No. AK8973, a 16-pin leadless IC package measuring 4mm square and 0.7mm thick, as the chip that will help future iPhone users determine their direction. It bundles a master clock oscillator."
