"To fix the Skype crash, all mobilesubstrate based hacks are disabled on the Skype app. This means you cannot use voipover3g or backgrounder with Skype app. Do not ask how to do it or point out that it doesnt work. The developer of mobile substrate has already stated that it will not work."

So only try the steps below if:
- you want to experiment with Skype over 3G, knowing that Skype might crash every 30 seconds.
If you have a jailbroken iPhone, and just want to use Skype normally (No VoipOver3G support), you must upgrade the MobileSubstrate file, so it stops crashing.
- Just load Cydia and update the MobileSubstrate file.

A: Install VoipOver3G first Q: How can I get VOIPover3G? A: You need a jailbroken iPhone with Cydia installed: read more here. In Cydia under the System section you will find the VoIPover3G package. Make sure to install SSH server if not done yet.

1. SSH into your iPhone with Fugu (Mac) or WinSCP (Windows)
2. Open /Library/MobileSubstrate/DynamicLibraries/VoIPover3G.plist
3. Add com.skype.skype as a bundleitem (see pic, via plist editor)
4. Save VoIPover3G.plist
5. Reboot your iPhone, just to be sure
   
6. Done! You should be able to make phone calls via your 3G connection.

The Internet Phone Company Skype, which is part of eBay Inc. is planning to launch its service for iPhone users tomorrow 31th March. A free Skype iPhone and iPod 2G app is expected in the App Store as of tomorrow. Q: But hey what is new? A: The App Store App called Fring (free app), allows the same function. With Fring you can:

• Login with your Skype account
• Instant Message your Skype friends.
• Make Skype calls with your Skype friends over WiFi
  
• And supports MSN,SIP, ICQ, GTalk, Twitter Chat, Yahoo Chat, AIM Chat

Note that there are jailbreak tricks to make Fring work over 3G. And if you wish, you can make Fring always active, while doing other things with your iPhone. Another alternative is the also free NimBuzz app [App Store link] which does nearly the same as Fring.
Q: So what is the disadvantage with Fring? A: Well Fring works fine on WiFi, but there are reports about heavy delays with Skype and SIP voice calls. It has been reported on several blogs that the Fring signal always passes a proxy server, before actually goes to the Skype or SIP server. Rumours are that the proxy server is causing delays. I have to admit it can be very annoying if you have a serious discussion and you facing delays like you calling over a slow satelite link and your connection get disrupted.
Q: Are there other applications beside Fring with less delay issues over 3G. A: Yes, in the Cydia (jailbreak) library you can find SIAX. This is an SIP and IAX (comparison here) client. Okay no skype here, but for cheap calls withou delays, SIAX can do the tricks. You can try it for free and cost you just a few bucks to use it forever! The cool thing is, it works over 3G - Edge - and GPRS!
Q: Okay so what can we expect tomorrow with the Skype App? A: Skype Chief Operating Officer Scott Durchslag said:

"The No. 1 request we get from customers is to make Skype available on iPhone. There's a pent-up demand," Durchslag said in an interview before the CTIA annual mobile showcase in Las Vegas, where Skype plans to launch the service on Tuesday."
"One of Skype's unusual iPhone features is the fact that it allows subscribers use to the phone numbers in their existing iPhone address book so they do not need duplicate lists."

Note: With SIAX, you are able to select a contact from your regular addressbook and dial it via SIP or IAX.

The Skype app is expected to work over WiFi only. There are other alternatives to make cheap calls. Fring and Nimbuzz are excellent App Store examples for IM and cheap voice calls. It is known that voice calls over 3G, Edge and GPRS are possible, but a jailbreak is needed. The Siax app is only available after a jailbreak and supports WiFi, 3G Edge and GPRS.

Few hour ago, a iPhone developer was "hacking around" with the carrier bundle files and iPhone with the beta firmware 3.0 loaded. He somehow first managed to activate the tethering preferences. Not only that, he was also able to actually tether his iPhone 3G to his laptop over USB. Based on the preference panel, it appears that you will be able to tether via USB or Bluetooth.

Tethering is a feature that allows you to share your iPhone's internet connection with your laptop, but has not been an allowed feature up until iPhone 3.0. Even with iPhone 3.0, mobile carriers generally charge an extra fee in the U.S. to allow tethering access.

Apple admitted yesterday that they had built in tethering support into the 3.0 release but had not yet coordinated with mobile carriers.

iPhone TIPS: HowTo Tethering over USB cable iPhone Tunnel Suite 2.7

[Updated 21th June 2009] With the release of iPhone OS 3.0 "Tethering" is available to both the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS platform, including a custom APN hack without jailbreak. Please refer to THIS post.
Q: What is the iPhone Tunnel Suite 2.7 ? A: This is a Windows application that enables you to surf the internet from a big computer, like your laptop or desktop, while using your iPhone 3G, EDGE GPRS data connection. The special thing is that you can choose to tether over your USB cable rather than using WIFI. Q: Do you need a jailbroken iPhone? A: In the instruction say something like SSH and Cydia so I say yes. Unfortunately to make it al work, you need to be a kind of geek. Fortunatly I found THIS blog from Austria where they produced a well written manual but unfortunately it is written in German. So I have "tried" to translate it with help of google and myself for our readers. We at IT&T have not tried this instruction, so can not and will not support you if you will have a go.

"Here is the long-awaited guide to iPhone Tunnel Suite 2.7. The iPhone Tunnel Suite allows you to use the iPhone as mobile internet modem, and the iPod Touch as a WiFi antenna - the so-called "Tethering" via cable. It is therefore no need Wifi.

The GUI of iPhone Tunnel Suite 2.7 contains the following:
