Situation: iPhone tethering does not work anymore. I have connected my iPhone to my macbook via USB, then I have enabled tethering on my iPhone. That is Settings/General/Network/Internet Tethering => ON. Next, on my macbook, in Network of System Preferences, I try to select the iPhone. see screenshot. However, as you can see, the iPhone is not connected or active.
Solution: Just start iTunes. That's all. The iPhone network will be active and it wil get an 172.x.x.x address. You can go online on your macbook via the iPhone 3G data connection. (Thanks to Marcel)
UPDATE: Sure, your mobile provider has to allow you do tethering. Otherwise it won't work.
Yes..it works fine for me on OS4.1 iPhone 3GS
