iPhone TIPS: Exchange ActiveSync to arrive on Hotmail on Monday

Microsoft's Live Hotmail will finally support it's own ActiveSync technology this Monday. source: Microsoft's Dharmesh Mehta told CNET The fun part is that competitor Gmail has implemented ActiveSync support last year already. As I wrote about the multiple Exchange ActiveSync accounts support on iOS 4 [HERE], Hotmail users can add their Hotmail account to the iPhone's mail app in conjuction with their Gmail and Corporate Exchange accounts making the mail app as the all-in-one personal mail center in your pockets. Enabling you to manage and use Hotmail Calendaring, Email, and Contacts is often the last mile of gain total control of your personal and corporate information management. The reason is that many of us still have a very very old Hotmail address which you can't deny it, but till now the incoming hotmail email was often read and replied by the unhandy web user interface of mobile hotmail on your iphone.
Last week I tried  to connect my iPhone via an Exchange ActiveSync profile and for an iPhone with iOS 4.0.2 that goes like this:

1. Tap Settings =>Tap Mail, Contacts, Calendars =>Tap Add Account
2. Then Tap Microsoft Exchange and enter the following
3. Email : John@hotmail.com
4. Domain: Leave blank
5. Username: John@hotmail.com
6. Password:
7. Description: My Hotmail  
8. Tap Next, this will take 30 seconds before a response asking for a server 
9. Use m.hotmail.com as server
10. SSL: ON

Hello xxx,
To get Hotmail on-the-go, you recently tried to set up a service called ActiveSync from your mobile device.
We are really glad that you're interested, but we had so many sign-ups that we had to temporarily stop accepting new ones.

iPhone TIPS: MS Exchange ActiveSync and Passcode Lock

These accounts are supported by gmail servers and corporate MS Exchange servers starting from version MS Exchange 2003 (and 'native' Device Password Policy support from SP2) That is a big advantage compared to the max. 1 account limit in iOS 3.x and 2.x. This is excellent to use your iPhone to have push gmail account and a push corporate MS Exchange e-mail. Then the universal email box come into place. The Universal mailbox (first in iOS 4.0) shows all your private and business email in one single chronological list. But the best part is your Contacts and Calendar app. You can lookup the complete Exchange Global Address List (GAL) on your iPhone's Contacts App. Receiving meeting requests automatically in your Calendar app. For example you plan a meeting with coworkers and a Room as resource within your Calendar app, as if you were sitting behind MS Outlook. For example the Policy may force your iPhone to have a mandatory passcode lock enabled. The effect of this exchange policy is, the first time you setup an exchange active sync account, it force you to provide a passcode. Then every time you unlock your iPhone, it will ask for the pass code. And you can't remove it! Yes you can, after you remove the exchange active sync account. In addition there is a policy which can save your butt. It is called "Wipe device after failed (attempt)". The example below is set to 8 attempts. So all your data is destroyed after 8 failed attempts to enter the correct passcode. Can you imagine what happens when your 4 year old kid get his hand on your iPhone and tries to guess your passcode :) I think sync your iPhone with iTunes everyday. By the way, I haven't tried the "wipe". Anyone does? Please tell me if it really wipes all data. place comment pls!!  I haven't find out what happens when you have multiple Device Password Policies activated by multiple active sync accounts. iPhone TIPS: My iPhone 3G Runs Faster on iOS 4.0.2 and Exchange Push

 - by iPhone-tips-tricks.com - About a hour ago, I have upgraded my iPhone 3G from iOS 4.0.1 to iOS 4.0.2. The first impressions are very positive. Why? Because my sluggish iPhone 3G seems to run faster and smoother than on iOS 4.0.1 and iOS 4.0. Don't expect the speed of a iPhone 4 or iPad. However, the speed is very comparable with iOS 3.1.x or iOS 2.2 on a iPhone 2G. What is improved? Well, first of all Safari opens faster. And when I tap on the search bar, my keyboard pops-up nearly instantly. Also when I type on my keyboard, the keyboard responses very smooth. No more keyboard freeze. When I close Safari by hitting the Home button, Safari closes instantly. Screen rotation is also much smoother, for example the Photos app runs better than iOS 4.0 and 4.0.1. In general, all apps are starting faster and provides me the feeling that my good old iPhone 3G is usable again. Note: I kept my my spotlight active for Applications and Contacts. By switching this spotlight off, it should improve the performance too [see older post]. I have to confess that I had experienced speed improvement too by using Exchange in stead of IMAP on my gmail mail accounts. Since last year, Gmail accounts supports MS Exchange / Active sync push mail. However iPhone iOS 2.x and 3.x only supports a maximum of 1 MS Exchange push account. Because I am using multiple Gmail accounts, I had to use IMAP, because you can add multiple of them on iOS 2.x and 3.x. However, the new iOS 4.x now supports multiple MS Exchange accounts so I swap them to use Exchange push. And It looks like it save me some CPU cycles and should consume less battery. And the most important thing i have noticed, my good old iPhone 3G seems to act faster without the IMAP accounts. I need to tell you that I disabled "fetching" every 15 minutes because "push" will notify you near realtime! Please share your ideas about this subject and leave a comment. thanks.

To make FaceTime calls faster, there is a free app called FaceNow. Normally you have to browse through your contacts to find FaceTime a user. This app creates a favorites list of FaceTime capable contacts. To make a FaceTime call just tap        a name out of this list and you are on FaceTime.

iPhone TIPS: 3G Sluggish Speed Comparison Video [iPhone 2G vs 3G vs 3GS vs 4]

In this article of wsj.com, it reports that Apple is "looking into" reports of issues being experienced by iPhone 3G users who have upgraded to the company's new iOS 4. We at ITT also reported that the iPhone 3G is behaving sluggish when updated to iOS 4.0 and iOS 4.0.1. See THIS post. Meanwhile many blogs reporting that turn-off the Spotlight search function will make the iPhone 3G behave like a iOS 3.x while running iOS 4.0+. To shutdown Spotlight do the following:
Settings/ General/ Home Button/ Spotlight search, turn search indexing off for all items (uncheck them). 
This reduces the overall workload of the system, so it appears to give an overall performance boost that is significant.
