Apple TV TIPS: Jailbreak Apple TV 2 for Windows and Mac /w greenpois0n 1.0 RC6

Since some hours ago simple jailbreak software is available for both Windows and Mac computers to jailbreak your Apple TV (2010). It is called greenpois0n 1.0 RC6. See the post for RC5. Again, for newcomers: After using this software once, you can gain access to your Apple TV device. It allows you to install software and enable features which is not distributed by Apple.  After the jailbreak, you open the door to install media software like XBMC, PLEX  NITO TV and more. Q: What iDevices are supported beside the 2010 Apple TV?

A: Supported iDevices with greenpois0n 1.0 RC6

- iPod Touch 2G (all bootroms)

- iPod Touch 3G

- iPod Touch 4G

- iPad 1G

- iPhone 3Gs (all bootroms)

- iPhone 4

- iPhone 4 Verizon (_not_tested_)

- ___AppleTV 2___ (Apple TV MC572LL/A (2010))

Q: What do I need to do the jailbreak? A: You need
- an 2nd generation Apple TV (2010) running iOS 4.2.1 4.1.1 (See settings/general/about/software version)
 - the power cable, do not plug in yet!
- the Apple Remote
- micro USB cable (like this microUSB Cable)

- at least MacOSX 10.5 (OSX in a VM won't work) - OR for Windows - at least Windows XP

- a working internet connection

[ update: activation is not required for apple tv] NOTE this version of greenpois0n doesn't include a patched activation system. You'll need to activate your device using iTunes

Q: How to do it? A:
1. Download your copy via greenpois0n.com

2. Only connect the USB cable to your Apple TV and PC or Mac.  - Do not connect the power yet.
But have your power cables ready -
3. Quit iTunes when it shows up
4. Execute greenpois0n RC6 on your PC or Mac
Follow the instructions,  the sequence will have the following order:

• Plug AppleTV in to USB
• Plug in power adapter
• Press and hold MENU PLAY/PAUSE on the Apple Remote

5. Hit yes to confirm you are jailbreaking an Apple TV

6. Hit the Jailbreak button and follow the instructions.

NOTE: If the status shows complete, wait 40+ seconds before you continue

7. After completion, connect the jailbroken Apple TV to your TV set again.

8. Go to the Greenpois0n menu and select Inject Software to install [update: not Cydia but NITO installer will be installed. From NITO you can install XBMC and more]. Read more about Cydia in my RC5 post

iPad NEWS: iPad 3 as Fall 2011 Surprise

March 2th 2011 UPDATE HERE
Techcrunch reports that a iPad 3 is rumoured to be released this fall making Apple to speedup introducing two next generation iPads in one single year: iPad 2 in spring 2011 and iPad 3 in fall 2011.

"We've now heard that this "fall surprise" is related to this would-be iPad 3. We don't have any more concrete information beyond that. But, as of right now, the plan is apparently to release one iteration of the iPad in the next few weeks. And then blow the doors open with another new version in the fall.
[...] But Apple has a history of not resting on their laurels. That's perhaps the key reason why they've been so successful in recent years. And that's exactly why they strike with the iPad 3 in the fall.

Now, I have no details as to what this iPad 3 would include. But one very solid guess is a retina-like display that the iPhone 4 currently has. There's obviously been many rumors of this for the iPad 2, but it's not happening yet. But perhaps it could this fall. Another, slightly smaller form factor will clearly be another guess. Steve Jobs has famously played down that idea in the past -- but he often does that and turns around with an offering."

It allows you to install software coming from other places than Apple App Store.  After the jailbreak, you will have an App called Cydia. Q: How to do it? A: download your copy via greenpois0n.com and check the REAME file for the exact instructions. The content should look like this:

1. plug the device to your computer using the USB cable
2. quit iTunes if it shows up
3. start greenpois0n.app
4. follow instructions
5. the device will boot a 1st time with verbose text on screen. This operation will install the jailbreak on the device.
6. the device will reboot normally
7. start the Loader application (green icon on the SpringBoard), and follow instructions to install Cydia
In case of troubles
1. try to start greenpois0n from a terminal : sudo .//Contents/MacOS/greenpois0n
It'll give you more informations on the reason of the problem

IPad News: Someone Saw the iPad 2

During launch of  The Daily, someone related to Reuters has spotted the iPad 2. Weeks ago there were reports from the hardware guys, talking about a front facing and a back camera for the new iPad 2. However, my opinion is that an iPad is not suitable for video conferencing because it is too heavy to hold and iPad for more than 3 minutes in front of your face.

Therefore the size of an iPhone is much more suitable. And by the way, how often do you use FaceTime of Skype with video.
